David Z, also known as David Rivkin,
is an award-winning producer, engineer, mixer, and writer
who has an ability, as well as a knack, for finding and
developing independent, cutting-edge artists into hugely
impactful stars. Whether it be with Prince on "Purple
Rain," the Fine Young Cannibals on "The Raw
and the Cooked," Jonny Lang's "Lie to Me,"
Kenny Wayne Shepherd on "Ledbetter Heights,"
or Big Head Todd & the Monsters' "Sister Sweetly,"
all had their careers take off by their early work with
David. Currently based in Nashville, TN, David has honed
his craft through a wide variety of projects and genres,
ranging from Storyville to Frank Black to Buddy Guy to
Leo Kottke to Gov't Mule to Angelique Kidjo to his Grammy-winning
work with Etta James. In addition, his interest in arranging
and songwriting continues his co-writing experience early
on with Gram Parsons, which everyone from Elvis Costello
to Yo La Tengo has covered. Recently, two David Z projects
garnered significant awards - the Kottke/Gordon record,
"Sixty Six Steps," released in late August on
RCA Victor, won the JAMMY award for Studio Album of the
Year, and Tab Benoit's Album, "Fever for the Bayou,"
won the Handy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album
of the Year. In addition, June 2006 finds the release
of the David Zmixed Frank Black album, "Fastman,
Radierman," on Back Porch Records/Virgin.
